moji masala® vs. Buying Spices Individually: Which Is Better for Indian Cooking?

Pre-measured moji masala® spice kits cost $5–7 per dish vs $40+ to buy individual spices — and nothing goes stale in your pantry.

The Real Cost of Cooking Indian Food from Scratch

moji masala® vs. Buying Spices Individually: Which Is Better for Indian Cooking? - moji masala Indian cooking

If you have ever tried to cook authentic Indian food at home, you know the drill: you find a recipe online, scroll through a list of 10 to 15 spices, and then spend the next hour at the grocery store hunting for black cardamom, fennel seed, Kashmiri chili, dry ginger powder, and half a dozen other ingredients you have never heard of.

By the time you check out, you have spent $50 to $100 on spice jars — most of which will sit in your cabinet for months, slowly losing their flavor. And you still are not sure you got the ratios right.

There is a better way.

What Is moji masala®?

moji masala® makes pre-measured, dish-specific Indian spice blends. Each packet contains the exact spices you need for one complete dish, serving 3 to 5 people. No measuring, no guesswork, no leftover jars.

Just open the packet, add a few fresh ingredients from your grocery store (usually an onion, garlic, oil, and your protein or vegetables), and follow the simple recipe included with every packet.

One packet. One dish. 30 to 45 minutes. Done.

The Cost Comparison

Let us break down what it actually costs to make Rogan Josh — a traditional Kashmiri lamb curry — both ways.

Buying Individual Spices

Spice Typical Price Amount Used
Black Cardamom $8.99 2 pods
Green Cardamom $7.99 3 pods
Cumin Seeds $4.99 1 tsp
Coriander Seeds $4.99 1 tsp
Fennel Seeds $4.99 1 tsp
Whole Cloves $6.99 4 cloves
Cinnamon Sticks $5.99 1 stick
Black Peppercorns $5.99 1/2 tsp
Kashmiri Chili Powder $7.99 1 tbsp
Garlic Powder $3.99 1 tsp
Ginger Powder $4.99 1 tsp
Turmeric $3.99 1/2 tsp
Salt to taste
Total upfront cost $72.88 12 jars

You will use a tiny fraction of each jar for one dish. The rest sits in your cabinet. Most ground spices lose their potency within 6 months, so much of what you bought will go to waste before you use it again.

Using moji masala® Rogan Josh Masala

What You Get Cost
1 pre-measured packet (all 13 spices, perfectly proportioned) $7.00
Serves 3–5 people
Ready in 30–45 minutes
Recipe included on packet
No waste — entire packet used in one dish
Total cost $7.00

That is $7 vs. $73 for the same dish. Even if you already own some of the spices, a single moji masala packet eliminates the guesswork of measuring and proportioning — which is the hardest part of Indian cooking.

But What About Flavor?

This is the question everyone asks — and the answer is what sets moji masala apart from generic curry powders.

moji masala is not curry powder. Curry powder is a one-size-fits-all blend invented for Western convenience. It uses the same generic mix for every dish. That is why everything made with curry powder tastes… the same.

moji masala blends are dish-specific. Each one is formulated for a single traditional Indian recipe:

The recipes come from our co-founder Shireen Qadri’s Kashmiri family. Her mother and grandmother ground these spice blends by hand for every meal. We took those family recipes and made them accessible to everyone.

Who Is moji masala Best For?

moji masala is perfect for:

  • Beginners who want to cook Indian food but don’t know where to start
  • Busy home cooks who want authentic flavor without spending an hour on spice prep
  • People who love Indian food but live far from an Indian grocery store
  • Gift givers looking for a unique, practical food gift
  • Health-conscious cooks — all blends are gluten-free, vegan, and made with no fillers, preservatives, or MSG

If you are an experienced cook who already owns 20+ spice jars and enjoys the process of measuring and blending, you may prefer buying individual spices. But for everyone else, moji masala removes the biggest barriers to Indian cooking: cost, complexity, and uncertainty.

Are moji masala® spice packets gluten-free?

Yes. All moji masala® spice blends are gluten-free. The blends are manufactured in a shared facility that processes milk, soy, eggs, wheat, peanuts, and tree nuts. Always check the product page and package label for the most up-to-date allergen information.

Do moji masala® blends include salt?

Only three blends contain salt: Dahl Masala (2300 mg total / 460 mg per serving), Tandoori Masala (4600 mg / 575 mg per serving), and Rogan Josh Masala (4600 mg / 800 mg per serving). We use a pure mineral-rich Himalayan pink salt.

What do I need to cook with a moji masala® packet?

All ingredients required are on the back of each pack. Just a short grocery list and one protein or veggie base. Think onion, garlic, tomato, oil, plus your main ingredient. We keep it simple so weeknight cooking stays easy.

How spicy are moji masala® blends?

Spice levels vary by blend, from mild to medium heat. You can always reduce heat by using less of the packet and adding more cream, yogurt, or tomato while cooking.

Can I use moji masala® blends for recipes beyond the one suggested?

Yes. moji masala® blends are versatile and work in marinades, soups, roasted vegetables, rice, lentils, and more. Start with a smaller amount and adjust to your taste.
