Cilantro-Mint Chutney Recipe: The Perfect Indian Condiment

Fresh cilantro-mint chutney in 5 minutes — the bright, herbaceous Indian condiment that goes with everything from tandoori chicken to samosas.

Cilantro-mint chutney is a bright, herbaceous, slightly spicy Indian condiment that takes 5 minutes to make and goes with absolutely everything — from tandoori chicken to samosas to plain rice.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh cilantro (stems and leaves — the stems have the most flavor)
  • 1 cup fresh mint leaves
  • 1 small green chili (serrano or jalapeño), roughly chopped
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 2 tbsp water
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp sugar (optional — balances the heat)
  • 1 small clove garlic (optional)

Instructions

  1. Blend everything in a food processor or blender until smooth. Add water 1 tablespoon at a time until you reach your preferred consistency — thick for dipping, thinner for drizzling.
  2. Taste and adjust: More lime for brightness, more chili for heat, more salt for depth.
  3. Serve immediately or refrigerate in an airtight jar for up to 5 days.

That's it. Five minutes, no cooking, no special equipment beyond a blender.

What to Serve It With

The real question is: what can't you serve it with?

  • Tandoori Chicken: The classic pairing — smoky chicken + bright chutney
  • Masala Wings: Use it as a dipping sauce instead of ranch
  • Naan and roti: Spread it on like butter
  • Grilled meats: Works as a marinade or finishing sauce
  • Eggs: Drizzle on scrambled eggs or omelets
  • Sandwiches: Spread on wraps, burgers, or grilled cheese
  • Rice: Stir a spoonful into plain basmati for instant flavor

Tips

  • Use the cilantro stems: They're more flavorful than the leaves and blend perfectly smooth
  • Control the heat: Remove chili seeds for mild, keep seeds for spicy
  • Make it creamy: Add 2 tbsp yogurt for a creamier, milder version
  • Freeze it: Pour into ice cube trays and freeze — pop one out whenever you need chutney
